TELL YOUR FAMILY AND DOCTOR YOU HAVE SIGNED A LIVING WILL AND WHERE YOU KEEP IT
Your Living Will tells your doctor and family you do not consent to having your dying process prolonged artificially. It speaks for you if you are unable to communicate when you are dying. It follows that you yourself will not be able to hand it to those treating you when you are unconscious and dying. It is therefore absolutely essential that you, as soon as you have signed your Living Wills, make sure your family understand your wishes, and that they will be responsible for finding your Living Will and handing it to those treating you. If your family is far away, give a copy of your signed Living Will to a close friend. Residents of retirement complexes should give a copy to either the Sister-in-Charge, Frail Care or Management.
TELL YOUR FAMILY ABOUT THE BACK-UP OF YOUR LIVING WILL BY THE SOCIETY
We remind our members that Living Wills obtained through registered membership of SAVES - The Living Will Society will be backed up, in need, by us.
When you are dying, and your Living Will has been handed to your doctor/s (to ensure that your non-consent to artificial life support is obeyed), your family can, on your behalf, contact Head Office for advice or support at this time. Our Honorary Executive Committee are willing to discuss each specific case with the doctor/s concerned, and to report back their findings to your family. Please remember, that to save your family needless heartache, and to enable us to liase between doctors and family, your family must be told that such support is provided by the Society.
