Principles of the Living Will Society

Theologically, Living Wills (Advance Directives) are accepted throughout the world.

CATHOLIC
Pope John Paul II: "To forego extraordinary or disproportionate means is not the equivalent of suicide or euthanasia; it rather expresses acceptance of the human condition in the face of death, or a wish to avoid the application of a medical procedure disproportionate to the results that can be accepted, or a desire not to impose excessive expense on the family or the community".(Pope's Declaration on Euthanasia,Vatican City 1980).
"The removal of pain and consciousness by means of drugs, when medical reasons suggest it, is permitted by religion and morality to both doctor and patient, even if the use will shorten life". ('Evangellum Vitae')

CHURCH OF ENGLAND
Dean Inge: "I do not think we can assume that God wills the prolongation of suffering and torture for the benefit of the soul of the sufferer".

UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
"We assert the right of every person to die in dignity without efforts to prolong terminal illnesses merely because the technology is available to do so".

JUDAISM
"The conclusion from the spirit of Jewish law is that while you may not do anything to hasten death, you may, under special circumstances of suffering and helplessness, allow death to come."

HINDU VIEW
"In the case where a patient is not able to survive without the use of artificial life preserving machinery, the patient should be allowed to die without the use of such machinery, being kept comfortabvle and free from pain until death occurs."

ISLAMIC VIEW
"A muslim who is removed from the life supporting machinery leaves himself to God and the moment of death comes at the appointed time.
Removal of life support system does not mean inducing death or hastening moment of death, beacuse it can go either way. Nothing should be done to actively induce death."

TELL YOUR PASTOR ABOUT YOUR LIVING WILL

For many people the period leading up to one's death would involve the participation of one's Minister of Religion. Who, then, would be a more suitable person with whom to entrust an original copy of your signed Living Will than your Priest, Pastor or Minister? So, in addition to lodging your signed Living Wills with family, doctor/s, hospital, retirement complex or frail care Matrons, do remember to ask your Minister to keep an extra copy with your personal church records.
